“I understand it can be very daunting to begin a new career or to continue progressing in healthcare. Assignments, computer skills and researching can be difficult for some – however, key to my role is supporting and guiding learners through this process.

The sense of achievement and renewed confidence I see in learners who have completed the modules is a pleasure to be a part of. It is always my goal to put learners at ease, gain the necessary skills and view themselves as a competent and effective carer.

QQI Course Module One
Care of the Older Person

After this QQI course module, the learner should have all the necessary theory and skills to care for older people. Although older people have the same needs as other age groups, they may have additional ones or require our assistance with these.

Learners will be shown how to care for this age group in relation to their physical, social, emotional, mental, financial, cultural, environmental, religious/spiritual and recreational needs, to name a few.

Elder abuse will be covered and the student will learn how to spot signs, assist the victim/family and prevent this from occurring again in the future.

Furthermore, the theory on Memory Care and Palliative Care will be delivered and students will learn how to care for patients and their families during these delicate and sensitive times.

QQI Course Module Two
Care Skills

After this core QQI course module, the learner should possess the caring skills and qualities needed to be an effective carer. This module emphases the importance of the student to cultivate their patience, understanding and professionalism.

Tasks and activities such as bathing, feeding, dressing and toileting, will be demonstrated and assessed. This will take place on work placement and in the classroom.

Students will be taught about the importance of communication – verbal, non-verbal and written.

Communication is a key skill in healthcare, particularly when caring for confused patients/residents or those with sensory impairments.
